Folklore and Fiends
£45.00
In the atmospheric surroundings of Tynemouth’s historic Watch House Museum, overlooking the mouth of the Tyne and surrounded by the relics of real shipwrecks, you’ll dive into the folklore of the sea and explore how these ancient stories can inspire new fiction.
Through discussion, creative exercises and practical writing activities, you’ll explore how to create your own maritime creatures and legends. You’ll consider seductive yet uncanny natural histories and the terrors of the deep from selkies and sirens to krakens and creatures not yet named.
You’ll explore how folklore narratives are built and how to make the familiar seem strange and uncanny. You’ll consider what happens when a human encounters maritime weird and what happens when the human is, in fact, the monster.
Whether you’re inspired by traditional folklore, folk horror, cryptozoology or your own wild dive into the darker realms, this creative writing course will help you craft coastline stories that feel eternal.
This creative writing course is suitable for beginning and emerging horror writers.
Summon your monsters from the deep. Just be careful that they do your bidding.
